What is going on here?
Sometimes it is too easy just to blame “the authorities” – but Sydenham residents deserve better explanations about what is happening when they have suffered roadworks and disruption to traffic and bus routes for nearly two years.
A case in point is the on-going works to replace our Victorian gas mains. The organisation primarily responsible for these is Southern Gas Network (SGN), which as a ‘statutory undertaker’ has a legal right to say when they need to dig up a road, leaving the local authority to co-ordinate with all others affected. |

Our train services are under threat again from multiple fronts.Film of funeral protest here ... With the cross-party support of local politicians, the Forest Hill and Sydenham Societies have been running a campaign against proposed cuts to our service on one of Southern's busiest passenger routes. We have written to the Minister of Transport, both privately and in an open letter, requesting a meeting to discuss our concerns, but while we have had a reply, he has not yet agreed to a meeting. Literally thousands of people have already signed our petition - see below! |

Fifty six set off from Crystal Palace Park Sunday 20th September at 10.00, and some more joined us at the Dulwich Wood House and other points along the way. Tim, the nominal leader, got lost in Dulwich Woods with a small group, who thereby missed Steve's explanantions about the old High Level railway tunnel. Reunited, everyone continued to Horniman Gardens, where we were met by Gordon Lucas, head of gardens.

In 1809 the financially pre-doomed Croydon Canal came to fruition, changing for ever our area, dividing upper from lower Sydenham, and the two sides - now of the tracks - of Forest Hill. Nearly 150 members of the Sydenham and Forest Hill Societies and friends met to commemorate the event, and hear local historian Steve Grindlay tell of his latest researches on its history, its course and impact on current streets and open spaces, with folk songs from Andrew King.

'No' to cuts in rail services |

A well attended public meeting last Thursday, but hardly a convincing account of why direct services are to be cut from Sydenham to Charing Cross, while services there from other parts of South East London are to increase. A Southern Rail manager let us know that after a while where people live would adjust to change rail services ... which is undoubtedly true, but do they care about such transitional costs when they are the ones who have to suffer them?
For more, see the account on Sydenham Town.
