The recent hot weather encourages groups of drinkers into the park – but why do they always use the young children’s playground? These photos were taken Monday morning at 9:30am in Mayow Park. |

No-one it seems - least of all it turns out the new tenants of 16 Sydenham Road, Kente Coffee shop - is happy about the loss of the wonderful old Machray's chemist front, probably the most distinguished individual shop in the Sydenham Road conservation area. When it was realised that it had been removed from behind the boards that had been covering it, within minutes we got in touch with Lewisham Council to set in motion a conservation area enforcement notice. |

It was sad cycling along the River Pool Linear Park this morning to have the persistent smell of petrol. From one of the bridges you could see the tell-tale irridescence. Coming back in the evening, the smell still lingered.
It would be interesting to find out who was responsible for the spillage - all council officers have been able to tell us is that 'The environment agency has been informed'. 11 June update
Glendales has kindly sent a copy of this Environment Agency press release. It appears they 'were called to the area late yesterday afternoon after receiving several calls'. How many calls I wonder, and starting when? I rang Lewisham Council between 8.30 & 9.00, and had been told that someone had already reported it. Later in the morning I rang Glendale, who hadn't heard of it. Seems like a phone call to the Environment Agency is required - press office 0118 -953 5555 - and in future let's try to remember the direct line 0800 807060. |

On May 27th, the ‘Have your Say on Mayow Day’ event was organised by Friends of Mayow Park, Lewisham’s Green Scene and Glendale, with support from the Young Mayor’s office. Braving the strong winds and driving rain, a number of young people came during the course of the day to suggest equipment and express preferences using the photos (of equipment) on the display boards. Some also chose to take part in the sporting activities just outside the marquee, which were organised by sports coaches from Teach Sport. Refreshments were available to all young people who participated in the consultation. Visitors were able to draw, make models, try a word-search and write suggestions of what they would and would not like in the proposed new older children’s zone. Entries for the competition to design-a-sign and name-the-space showed originality and creativity. A winner for the IPod Nano will be chosen after the competition finishes on 15th June 2009. |

First the bad news! After what was a time-consuming attempt to get funding from the Big Lottery “Awards for All” scheme we were finally advised at the end of May that we had not been successful. This was probably because we had promises of funding from both Sydenham and Forest Hill Assemblies Localities Funds and Sydenham’s Mayor’s Fund. However this has made us very budget conscious, which is no bad thing. And now for the good news! |
